Smith + Nephew is a global company with a strong track record in medical technology research and development.

Previously, they consistently secured UK innovation grant funding to support their projects.

However, over the past decade the number of grant applications to Innovate UK has surged by more than 270%, making UK innovation funding competitions much more competitive.

Smith + Nephew discovered that even high scoring applications (scoring over 75%), were no longer good enough to secure funding.

As a large company, they had sufficient in-house resource for writing grant applications, but they recognized that their bid writing team needed external professional expertise to improve their scores.

We analysed a number of their rejected applications. For each one, we provided a thorough gap analysis covering the full application.

We identified that value for money and justification for funding were key areas that needed to be clearly explained and strengthened.

We explained our analysis and identified all key issues that needed to be addressed via online meetings.

We collaborated closely with Smith + Nephew’s grant writers, employing a proven coaching method and an iterative review process to revise and strengthen the funding bids.

After re-submission, Smith + Nephew’s application scores increased beyond 80%, and exceeded the competitions’ funding thresholds.

As a result, our client successfully secured over £2.75 million in funding for innovative projects aimed at enhancing the precision and effectiveness of orthopaedic surgery.

These initiatives are poised to significantly enhance patient outcomes, especially amongst our aging demographic.
